Catherine is a contemporary British artist, living and working in Surrey. Her abstract paintings - studies of colour and light - are inspired by the landscape and our relationship with it and to each other. She is fascinated by colour, light and contrast, and encapsulating the feeling of a moment in time with expressive and energetic mark making. Initially inspired by the landscape, from close to her home in Surrey to the south coast, as well as from travels abroad, her paintings try to capture the energy of nature alongside that of our own presence - the balance of landscape and humans.
‘My paintings are as much a celebration of colour, and form and enjoying the interplay of light and contrast, as they are an expression of my love of the landscape and our connection with it. The use of colour can express so much about an experience in the landscape, or personal feelings and moments lived.’ - CW
Catherine works mainly in acrylics, incorporating mixed media such as oil and pigment sticks, chalk pastels, ink and charcoal. She uses a range of tools, from brushes and palette knives to rollers and bamboo skewers, to provide contrast and bring vitality to her work. Initially spending time in the landscape, sketching and taking notes and photographs, she then works in her studio, enjoying the step away from the original inspiration that that distance creates.
‘Hopefully people can read their own stories in my paintings, that may have stemmed from personal reflections and love of the landscape, but can be translated and interpreted in many different ways - the language of colour, expressing anything from grief to joy and hope.’ - CW
Catherine’s work is shown through a selection of UK galleries, and at art fairs, most recently the Affordable Art Fairs, London (see exhibitions page for details of galleries and forthcoming events). She was the winner of Surrey Artist of the Year 2018.
